EGU Crest

County Handicap Trophy

Initially the County Handicap Trophy, which this year celebrates its 50th Anniversary; is being extended to form the County Qualification event for the EGU Gold Medal held at Woodhall Spa on the 14th and 15th August.  As well as the two tournament rounds on the fantastic Hodgkin Course, the qualifiers get a practice round plus accommodation and food provided by the EGU, including a Reception/Dinner after the practice round.  The event at Woodhall Spa is sponsored by Fullers London Pride, last year everyone who went received a crate of London Pride, plus the winner was awarded “Beer for a Year”.  Cheshire are entitled to five people to represent them at the EGU Final, they will be selected on the basis of the five best nett scores in the Handicap Trophy.  I believe this is an ideal opportunity for Club Golfers to enjoy a wonderful golfing experience.  I would particularly like to emphasise that the both the County Handicap Trophy and the EGU Gold Medal are events specifically aimed at the regular Club Golfer of all handicaps.  The Handicap Trophy is a simple 18 Hole Stableford format off full handicap, the EGU Final is identical, apart from being 36 holes, held over two days.  The closing date for the County Handicap Trophy, being played this year at Sutton Hall GC on Wednesday 30th June, is Friday 18th June, there are spaces available, please make this invitation known throughout your Club and get some more entries in.  Full details and Entry Forms are available for download for convenience, some of your older Junior Boys who do not have school commitments around the 30th are also welcome to enter, I’m afraid however they will not get the free rations of beer, should they get to the EGU Final.

County Team Junior Club Championship

The second development is concerned with the County Team Junior Club Championship, this previously has been run in conjunction with the County U16 Championship.  Again the winning Champion Club are invited to represent Cheshire at the National Finals Tournament this year being held in Yorkshire.  We have been concerned for some time now that the importance of this particular County Championship, being imbedded within the U16 Championship, lacked focus and the prestige it deserved.  It also limited the representation to the youngest golfers and did not provide the opportunity for girls to participate.  Time was again very limited between the County Event and the National Finals.  The County have therefore been seeking to establish this Championship as a “stand-alone” fixture and we are delighted to be able to report that Stockport Golf Club have agreed to host the event this year, with the intention if successful, of providing it a permanent home in the Whitsun School Holiday from 2011.  The trial event will be held this year on Wednesday 25th August.  Further details are attached together with a Club Entry Form.  The format is a team of three juniors,  representing the Club, boys, girls or mixed, the best 2 Stableford scores off full handicap counting, the same format applies in the EGU Final.  Obviously we have to limit the field to the first 40 Clubs who apply, so get your application in early, closing date is the 9th August, so to avoid disappointment, do not leave it till then.  Clearly we do not have time this year to use the new event to select the Club to represent us at the 2010 EGU Final, therefore we have invited Heswall GC who won the Finals Day of the Cheshire Junior Leagues to play for Cheshire in the National Finals. Again, Entry Forms and Details are available for download if required.
